2:00 am
donald trump there making his way, as concentrated a face as the north korean leader, who made his way there just a few minutes before him. breaking news. we have special coverage live drum singapore and sentosa island with us president donald trump a short time ago, in the last five seconds, arriving for this historic summit with north korean leader kim jong—un, this historic summit with north korean leader kimjong—un, with this historic summit with north korean leader kim jong—un, with a motorcadejust korean leader kim jong—un, with a motorcade just arriving outside of the hotel 2.5 minutes before donald walked in. we understand the two men
2:01 am
will walk through the hotel towards the library to greet each other with only translators be for expanded bilateral talks begin. —— before. we have never seen that before, the american flag side—by—side with the north korean flag. it truly is a moment many thought not possible. we we re moment many thought not possible. we were here decades before, 9092, 1994, 1996, previous presidents trying to start dialogue with this regime. there is some hope things will change today. rupert, interesting to note, joining us on the island, interesting to note the timing, kimjong—un, the first to
2:02 am
walk in, and then donald trump 60 seconds before the start of the historic meeting, right until the end. presumably, there would have been negotiations about all of the choreography about how this happens. donald trump arrived first, but kim jong—un got into the hotel first. you can read that as kim waiting for donald to arrive, the more powerful country, the older man, that will have been carefully negotiated to get the visuals as they want them. but both sides will display it as they see fit. america will see it live on television. north koreans will not, it will be edited in a way that will make his arrival look as glorious as that of donald trump.
2:03 am
not as much at stake is donald trump has with the live pictures. a number of similarities between the two leaders. they both love the limelight and love a sense of power and importance. as you have said, the choreography of this is carefully staged so neither man feels one has the upper hand. we understand that has been orchestrated right down to the very moment the bilateral conversations ta ke moment the bilateral conversations take place in the official dialogue begins. the point they both entered the room at the same time, i understand. that would not surprise me at all. this is diplomacy, but also a big show for both leaders, we should remember that. donald trump isa should remember that. donald trump is a great showman. he is great at dominating the media landscape. what we have seen in the last 24 hours
2:04 am
from kim jong—un is similar. we have seen in the last 24 hours from kimjong—un is similar. kim jong—un is arriving as a different figure than his father, who would not have gone on a walkabout... figure than his father, who would not have gone on a walkabout. .. just a moment. you are watching bbc news on this historic moment. donald trump, the us president, the first sitting us president to meet with a north korean leader, kimjong—un. a moment the world thought would never happen. smiles. a handshake, of course. and a gentle manoeuvre from donald trump to the side as they make their way through to the
2:05 am
library where the two men, i understand, will have a brief conversation with just translators present. if they have not done that already. we will stay with these live pictures on the island of sentosa. extraordinary to see this moment. we understand the two people on either side will translate. pats on either side will translate. pats on the back there. and smiles between the two leaders. and a nod from one to the other. fascinating to see this. security is of course very heavy. we can presume the north korean leader following kim jong—un are rushing behind him. ithink
2:06 am
korean leader following kim jong—un are rushing behind him. i think we will probably, there we have it, the world's media, i think we will get a chance to show you the picture is in a short moment. this is what the world has been waiting for to see in sentosa on the island, to see the two 5 ha ke sentosa on the island, to see the two shake hands as theyjust did a moment ago, standing in front of the american and north korean flags. i have a body language expert. the first thing that struck me is when trump came out of air force one, he had a blue tie to be friendly. in this, he is drunk to be more formal,
2:07 am
a red tie, dominance, patting the forearm, behind, leading the way. he is trying to show his base he is leading. —— he is trying to be more formal. donald trump, almost a patriarchal figure, formal. donald trump, almost a patriarchalfigure, with his hand across the back of kim jon—un. we can speculate. slyly slightly at ease. donald trump likes to be dominant. it is important to him and his voters. it could have been morejovial and him and his voters. it could have been more jovial and over the him and his voters. it could have been morejovial and over the top. if donald is too approving, it will send a message of approval. i wanted
2:08 am
to see them being statesmen, so that was encouraging. we will see this again. 60 seconds ago this is what we saw. an historic moment. unprecedented. the first sitting us president to meet with a north korean leader. this is what is happening inside the capella hotel. a slightly delay on these pictures. they are sat side—by—side. this is the photo opportunity in the library. it is this photo you will see doing the rounds for days, months, years to come. it is very... we cannot underestimate this moment right now. if the president was correct in the past few days, he already knows whether this is good or not. this is when he gets a feel.
2:09 am
they are laughing. perhaps that's progress. when kim jong-un went into the hotel, concentration was on his face. donald trump, less smiles walking in, grinning slightly, but more serious. what do you read this? look at donald trump. he is in his typical position. kim jong—un look at donald trump. he is in his typical position. kimjong—un is uncomfortable, changing positions three times. not making eye contact. we can listen in. thank you. this way. thank you. all right, let's go. thank you very
2:10 am
much. thank you. thank you. this way. slightly busy, as you can imagine, following the delegation leaving that moment. something to see. donald trump, the us president, meeting with north korean leader kim jong—un. donald trump was saying thank you and thank you very much. it is safe to say, i am not sure if you can see the pictures, it is slightly awkward between them. not a lot of eye contact between them. that is noteworthy. i think it is
2:11 am
noticeable. i was at the summit when kimjong—un met noticeable. i was at the summit when kim jong—un met the south korean leader, and he looked very relaxed. they could speak the same language and they came from the same culture. they seemed to strike up a rapport quickly when they met at the demarcation line, going to the north, then back to the south. they we re north, then back to the south. they were at ease quickly. this seemed... ido were at ease quickly. this seemed... i do not want to cast too much conjecture, but kim jong—un looked a bit nervous, not making eye contact with donald trump. we do not know how much english he speaks. it is a bit difficult to immediately have a rapport when you are speaking to someone rapport when you are speaking to someone without the same language.
2:12 am
also, of course, he is standing in front of his enemy that his father and grandfather, his grandfather fought and his father stood against, this country that he leads really exist in opposition to the us. it does not have much more of a reason to exist, which some people might say is unfair. it has existed as a bulwark against what it calls us imperialism on the korean peninsula. he is sitting down with the sworn enemy of north korea. it is not surprising he is nervous ahead of this meeting. if you are just joining us, this is special coverage of the donald trump and enjoyment summit on sentosa island here in singapore. bring you up—to—date. ——
2:13 am
bringing. protocol was followed. a motorcade arrived at the capella hotel, playing host to the summit. kim jong—un arriving first and then donald trump. they are meeting behind closed doors. and then they came out for a symbolic moment with both of them shaking hands and standing in front of the flags of the us and north korea. seeing donald trump usher kim jong—un towards the translators before heading to the library area for an informal conversation and importantly a photo opportunity. we also saw some of the media of the world. i would also add the chosen media in particular, a few of the north korean journalists there. translators on behalf or the north
2:14 am
korean delegation and the american delegation. rupert, you made the point, and perhaps, for me, it sums up point, and perhaps, for me, it sums up the awkwardness, there is a language barrier, given the fact kim jong—un cannot speak fluent english. there is a slight delay in their conversation. this 45 minutes, 60 minutes, of one—on—one time they are now spending together is a very short amount of time if you speak the same language. for two leaders to have a one on one of one hour on their first meeting, that is not much time to get much to be going backwards and forwards, i have interviews around the world, sometimes it takes three times as long to do that interview when it has to go back and forwards through translation all the time. that will hinder their ability to get much done. and also to build up immediate
2:15 am
rapport. as far as we know, what is happening at the moment now, we understand perhaps that this is the start of the expanded bilateral talks between the two. my understanding is that begins in half an hour. i think they will have this not so brief one—on—one with just the translators present. and then it will be expanded to bring in senior officials before a working lunch. expectations have been rolled back
2:16 am
quite considerably in the last week or two. donald trump more talking about a debt to the session, the beginning of a process. it will be interesting to see what comes out of this, whether this is a photo opportunity, handshake, friendly get to and not much more, and whether there's going to be substantial document or agreement announced at the end of the meeting today. rupert, for now, thank you very much. rupert staying with us on sentosa island. we understand perhaps those official conversations, a dialogue of the summit, will get under way in 20 minutes or so. gasps from professor robert kelly, who joins minutes or so. gasps from professor robert kelly, whojoins me in singapore, quite something to take this in? it is and i hope we going to get something from it. if we give the north koreans legitimacy of all this, and play on loop on north korean media for a decade, we're getting somewhere. i have the
2:17 am
technical groups are getting something on missiles and nukes and verification specialists, i hope it is worth it. we will pour over the body language between the two men. i wa nted body language between the two men. i wanted to bring you in again here, you're looking at how they are sitting down and how donald trump is clasping his hands, talk me through what you make of how they are reacting to one another for the first time? if you saw the first handshake, when he is seen in the library, donald trump has his position, he is clapping his hands, a bit of nervousness. but kim jong—un, the reaches out for a second handshake. kim jong—un jong—un, the reaches out for a second handshake. kimjong—un has a very fleeting eye contact. eye contact is of paramount importance. the handshake was on for so long. the handshake was on for so long. the eye contact was not for too long. donald trump, being a
2:18 am
businessman, he is looking for his eyes. i will begin to see where this goes and what they talk about later. very little eye contact between the two men, very much looking ahead at the people taking the photos. more interested looking straightforward. for me, robert, i wonder if you agree with this assessment, the enormity of this event, perhaps dawning on them now as they look slightly uncomfortable. six months ago it was to card and all the rest of it, six months ago we were talking about nuclear war on the peninsular and this is a rapid turnaround, one of the concerns about the analyst community's opinion, swinging dramatically. a month ago we were talking about donald trump getting a nobel prize and now we're talking about this being a get—to—know—you meeting and the beginning of the processed. it would help us keep our bearings if this proceeded in a slower more organised manner than these wide
2:19 am
swings. now we look at the body language, we look at the handshake and the eye contact, but it will be about detail, what the two are able to really come away with here, denuclearisation on the table, lifting sanctions for north korea, but whatever happens moving on, we can't underestimate how significant this moment is for a nation that's never previously engaged with the west in this way, never engaged with america, who's always been seen as the archenemy. symbolism is really important in north korea. they need to explain to its people why they live in this backward state, north koreans know what south korea is like so ideology is important. we know that him getting the handshake and standing in front of the two flags is a big deal. the flags is important. that symbolises recognition. quite something to have equal recognition. the two of them
2:20 am
standing there and shaking hands. you mention the word statesmanlike, thatis you mention the word statesmanlike, that is the image they want the world to see them. and the view from washington and joining us is a research associate at the centre for international security studies at maryland. naoko aoki. what are you making of this moment? it is very historic and it is unprecedented. irony hope that there will be positive results out of it. —— i really hope. we've talked about of course the technical details which have been a little short on coming forward in terms of what we know the two men are going to discuss, what is your assessment now when we look at the concrete detail of what will unfold in the coming hours of what's likely to happen today? i think an outcome that is positive but still realistic would include two elements in a statement
2:21 am
by the two leaders that would be denuclearisation and a fundamental change in the relationship between the two countries. that would start a process for further diplomacy that would find a way to get there. naoko aoki, i wanted to ask you as well, conversation, of course, as we go into the details, but we mustn't forget the human rights record of north korea, the regime, are you getting a sense that that may well be brought up here? we haven't had any conversation leading up to this about... even from the briefing from mike pompeo, the us secretary of state, no mention of the human rights abuses of north korea. is it likely to come up do you think?|j don't likely to come up do you think?” don't see any signs that would be a major element in the current
2:22 am
negotiations, current talks, but eventually down the road, if the two countries are to normalise relations, human rights will have to be dealt with and that will be a topic that needs to be taken up between the two countries somewhere down the line. 0k. thank you very much for sharing your insights with us. much for sharing your insights with us. just approaching 23 minutes past nine here local time in singapore. the last 20 minutes or so have been quite something to see. you're watching this special coverage on bbc news of the historic summit between donald trump and kim jong—un. 0ur tokyo correspondent rupert wingfield—hayes is on the island of son tozer, where we understand the two men are having an informal meeting before the official summit gets under way —— sentosa. that's right. they‘ re summit gets under way —— sentosa. that's right. they're having their one on one sit down together, just the two leaders, just the

translators present too, as donald trump said a few days ago, get to know you —— to. he said he will get into that room and size up the north korean leader within a few seconds and decide if he is someone he can do business with. people might cast aspersions about some of the things donald trump says, but personal relationships can make big differences. think back to the cold war, the 1980s, president ronald reagan sat down with mikhail gorbachev, the secretary general of the soviet communist party, and their personal record really did make a difference, it did change history, really brought an end to the cold war, so that can happen. 0n the cold war, so that can happen. 0n the other hand, when president george w bush sat down with president putin of russia in the early 20005, he said he looked into his eyes and saw his soul, 5aw he was a good man, that hasn't turned out to be a constructive and
2:24 am
productive relationship between the us and russia in the time since. personal relationships can make a big difference. that's what donald trump i5 big difference. that's what donald trump is certainly banking on today. but it's not necessarily the case. this is a very, very difficult, very complicated and very long relationship with these two countries, hostility the5e relationship with these two countries, hostility these two countries, hostility these two countries have. we've sort of nine for a long time what the outline of any agreement between these two countries would be, denuclearisation in return for security guarantees, recognition, peace treaty and economic assistance. that's been on the table for at least 30 years. but there massive, ma55ive di5trust particularly on the part of the north korean leadership. rightly or wrongly it believes the us wants regime change, it wants to get rid of the kim regime and in the end once to get rid of the existence of north korea and have a reunified
2:25 am
korean peninsula under the republic of korea in the south. that is the starting point we are at. donald trump today is going to have to try to win kimjong—un trump today is going to have to try to win kim jong—un over to the idea that he can trust him. rupert, for now, thank you. rupert wingfield—hayes, to give you an idea of the conversation between the two. this is what we're getting about the latest reports of what was said a short time ago when they met. donald trump 5aid short time ago when they met. donald trump said to the selected media," i feel really great, we're going to have a great di5cu55ion feel really great, we're going to have a great discussion and i think tremendous success. it will be tremendously 5ucce55ful, we'll have a terrific relationship, i have no doubf! a terrific relationship, i have no doubt". kim jong—un said," a terrific relationship, i have no doubt". kimjong—un said," it a terrific relationship, i have no doubt". kim jong—un said," it wasn't easy to get here, the old prejudices and practices worked as obstacles in our way forward but we overcame all of them and we are here today". indeed they are. you're watching 5pecial coverage. stay with us as we continue this historic coverage of the meeting between the us and north

korea on bbc news. more to come live on bbc news. i'm babita sharma from singapore. stay with us. hello there. for many days, even weeks now, our weather has been stuck in a rut. long spell5 of warm sunshine, and just the odd thunderstorm. but, at long last, things are changing. you may not like the change because fir5tly we're bringing some cooler air in from the north. and then, from the atlantic, through the middle part of the week, we're going to bring quite an active frontal system, an area of low pressure, that will bring some wet and very windy weather, particularly across the north. that will be a bit of a shock to the system. but the changes are already under way. some cooler conditions through the day ahead. quite a lot of cloud around as well. that cloud will break up through the day, so we will see some spell5 of sunshine. the best of these likely to be found acro55 parts of wales and the south—west. equally, just the odd scattered shower5, but those temperatures down on where they have been.
2:27 am
highs of between 15 and 21 degrees. no more mid—205. now, during tuesday night, we'll see a mixture of clear skies and patchy cloud. it should stay just about dry. it's going to turn into a relatively cool night. temperatures in quite a few places should get down into single digits. we go into wednesday and we start off on a fine note, but frontal systems approaching from the north—west. more on that in a moment. we start wednesday, though, with high pressure across the british isles. so actually not a bad start to the day. good spell5 of the shine to be had. perhaps just the odd shower breaking out as cloud builds up through the day. but, up to the north—west, you will already have spotted this. quite a significant change. rain into northern ireland, western scotland by the end of the day. strengthening wind5 as well. and as we go through wednesday night, a spell of very disturbed weather. very heavy rain pushing in from the west. really strong winds as well. wind gu5t5 ea5ily 40—50mph. but perhaps through the central belt, tho5e wind gu5t5 as strong a5 60 mph. we will keep you posted on that forecast for wednesday night into thursday.
2:28 am
it all comes courtesy of this, an unusually deep area of low pressure for the time of year. but it will drift away fairly quickly during thursday. so the winds will ease, much of the rain will clear away. and actually things should brighten up through the day. but it is again going to feel relatively cool. tho5e temperatures at best between 15 and 21 degrees. yes, there will be some dry weather. there will be some spell5 of sunshine, but also spell5 of rain at times. that's all from me for now. hello, this is bbc news. i'm babita sharma in singapore, with special coverage of the kim—trump summit. donald trump and kim jong—un
